First Cannabis-based Facial Cream in Argentina

New trends introducing CBD in facial products bring to the table the legislative differences between countries regarding the cultivation and consumption of cannabis, whether for adult use or as a medicinal supplement. Cannabidiol, an ingredient included in medicinal formulas, does not produce abuse or dependence, nor does it have a psychoactive effect.

Throughout history, Argentine science has always had an important development and has stood out on several occasions, including three Nobel Prize-winning scientists. Today, the South American country is at the forefront of research into cannabis as a medicinal plant that can provide various health benefits.

Now It's Dermatology's Turn

With the approval of the ANMAT (National Administration of Medicines, Food and Medical Technology), the Alef Medical laboratory launched Dermabidiol CB (@dermabidiolcb), a cannabis-based cream with pharmaceutical quality, which promises multiple benefits and hints at a future of further developments.

This product has moisturizing, soothing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, the phytoingredient has a wide range of effects on the skin: it brightens, improves its texture, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, reduces blemishes, helps maintain hydration, calms and regulates sebum production. It also reconstitutes the skin barrier and increases the skin's resistance to stress.

However, its function is not merely aesthetic, since it contributes to improving certain pathologies, such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, seborrheic and atopic dermatitis, as a complement to specific treatments. And, given its anti-inflammatory properties, it fights acne. In cases of psoriasis, acne, and rosacea, the anti-inflammatory, anti-seborrheic and immune system regulating action are responsible for the improvements obtained. "Its potential is not yet fully exploited and new findings are expected," says Andrea Giuliani, head dermatologist of the dermatology service of the Central Hospital of San Isidro.

On the other hand, "THC, as a phytocannabinoid, could produce an effect similar to cannabidiol. But, due to its psychoactive and psychotropic nature, it is not desirable for it to be found in cosmetic products," clarifies Dr. Giuliani. The Alef Medical laboratory also produces a medicine, based on cannabis, approved by ANMAT, to treat refractory epilepsy in children. In both cases, it is guaranteed that they do not contain THC.

However, as it is a 100% natural product, cannabidiol is the phytoingredient with more research in progress to be applied to dermo-cosmetics, which opens a range of new findings and indications in the future. The formula of Dermabidiol CB, the Argentine brand pioneer in incorporating the active ingredient in the cream, is enriched with honokiol, magnolol, vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, allantoin, argan, olive, and almond oil, which enhance its action. Its use is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, nor in children or older adults, it is very important to take into account that it must be medically indicated.

This new facial cream was presented to society four months ago, thousands of units have been sold, and dermatologists have begun to prescribe it, already counting on the comments of their patients. "Its texture is soft and light; it absorbs quickly and is super moisturizing; it leaves the skin looking rested and with luminosity; it lightens dark circles and spots; it has no perfume and that allows me to use it on the eye contour; it attenuates rosacea", are some of the comments from the public on social networks that have already tried the product.

In these cases, Dr. Giuliani indicates it as a single-day cream, perhaps associated with a serum. Over time, "they feel an improvement in skin elasticity," she assures. In patients with rosacea who adopted the product, she reports that it did not cause irritation or burning.

As there is still no presentation for the body, it is recommended, punctually, to place on some eczema plaque. It is currently on sale mainly in pharmacies in Argentina. By the end of the year, they promise more products to complete the line. At the moment, the company is in talks with Chile and Uruguay to start exporting and the laboratory has received inquiries from Spain.
